June 2026
Marin VEG Newsletter

Happy June! Solstice, summer and sunny days lie ahead.  A vegan diet will not prevent skin cancer, so remember a hat a sunscreen as you enjoy the outdoors this month.  There may not be a newsletter in either July or August if plans take me away from the desk.  I will still love you, even if you don't hear from me.

Goatlandia Thrift Store Now Open and Adult Camp in July
Another wonderful reason to visit Sebastopol is the opening of a new thrift store that benefits Goatlandia Animal Sanctuary.  On the main road into town, immediately past the car wash, you will find The Thrifty Goat (781 Gravenstein Hwy S in the Southpoint Center).  The Thrifty Goat is open Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 - 5:00 (until 4:00 for donations).  Learn how to shop, donate, and volunteer at Goatlandia Sanctuary | Thrifty Goat  [Side note: Sebastopol's wonderful Muir's Tea Room and Cafe will be closed in July. So plan your visit and make a reservation for June or August.]  Also note that on Saturday, July 18, Goatlandia will host a summer camp day for adults. Learn about it at Goatlandia.com

Nicholas Kristof on Pig Farming
New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof usually writes about human suffering, but in this piece he exposes the ways pigs suffer in the meat industry. Please read and share it.   I was delighted to see this issue being brought to light in a major news outlet.

San Francisco VegFest

What was formerly called the World Vegan Festival is changing its name to San Francisco VegFest.  This is the signature event of the San Francisco Vegan Society (formerly called the San Francisco Vegetarian Society). Here's the reason for the change, from SFVS:

A New Chapter: San Francisco World Vegan Festival is now San Francisco VegFest

After thoughtful deliberation at our April board meeting, the Board voted to rebrand our signature event to San Francisco VegFest. This change follows a recommendation from our Committee Co-Chairs (Greg Rohrbach and Karen Shuster) with the full support of the whole VegFest Committee. As Greg and Karen noted, while "World Vegan Festival" was originally chosen in 1999 to celebrate World Vegetarian Day, the "World" designation is now more formally associated with International Vegetarian Union (IVU) global congresses. By shifting to SF VegFest, we are leaning into our identity as a vibrant, local community celebration. We recognize this is a big change, but we believe it will streamline our marketing and better reflect who we are today.

Mr.Charlies Expands

I had not heard of this vegan fast food chain, but was glad to learn about it and its growing success.
