April 2026
Marin VEG
How will you be an April fool this year? I will tell silly
jokes.
Here is a riddle: What did the sick foot say to the healthy
foot?..........I need a pedicure.
I hope you will savor the green trees, singing birds, and exuberant
flowers that April brings. And enjoy hearing and telling silly
jokes.
Cancer Study Unpacked
Last month I told you about a study that showed a vegan diet to be
protective for most cancers, but not colon cancer. Now we have
explanations from two respected registered dieticians. Ginny
Messina, The Vegan RD, offers this reader-friendly interpretation of
the study: https://
www.theveganrd.com/2026/03/vegan-diets-and-colon-cancer-the-role-of-calcium/
And Jack Norris of Vegan Outreach offers these three more
scientific analyses:

Tick Bite Makes Victims Severely Allergic to Meat and Dairy
I wrote about this a few months back, but this article explains
more and reports how the allergy can be fatal

Congratulations to PCRM
The incomparable Physicians for Responsible Medicine is
celebrating the 25th anniversary of their Food For Life program.
This is a nation-wide (international, actually) plant-based
nutrition and cooking class program that changes lives. More than
450 instructors and institutions teach thousands of classes a year
to tens of thousand participants. PCRM was also instrumental in
stopping the use of animals in medical schools and laboratories
throughout the country and in passing laws to require alternatives
to cow's milk in schools without requiring a doctor's note. Get to
know this powerful organization. As a supporter I receive their
magazine Good Medicine four times a year. Knowing about their work
makes me smile.

lauren ornelas Stepping Down from Leadership at Food Empowerment
Project
Another one of my favorite not for profits is the Food
Empowerment Project. The organization promotes vegan living, farm
worker rights, food justice, animal rights and human rights. Its
brilliant and compassionate founder and leader is leaving the
organization in September. Here is her announcement. I look
forward to seeing whatever lauren does next.

Men and Meat
This year marks 35 years since The Sexual Politics of Meat was
first published. If you have not read it, I hope you will. The
author, Carol J. Adams is brilliant and insightful. Her publisher,
Bloomsbury, hosted an online talk with Carol in March, and I'm
waiting for a link to the recording so I can share it. Meanwhile,
The Huffington Post published an interesting piece that touches on a
small fraction of the points Adams makes in her seminal book. You
may have to sign in to The Huffington Post to read this, but it's
free (with annoying ads popping up urging you to subscribe).
