March 2026
Marin VEG Newsletter

The last day of February felt like summer.  Who knows what March will bring? Whatever weather shows up, I hope we can enjoy it in good health and with good friends.

The Humane Hoax and a webinar about humanewashing are two free on-line events this month.

Three studies all show good news about choosing a vegan diet.
One magazine declared the best vegan restaurant in each of the 50 states. Switzerland has new laws to protect animals. And a documentary about Dr. Michael Greger and his book How Not to Die is out and viewable for free. Read about these happenings below.

Humane Hoax Conference on Zoom
The always inspiring and interesting free conference from Compassionate Living will take place on Zoom on Tuesday, March 17 from 10 to noon.  This year's speakers will dive deep into humane labels and marketing myths and explore the ways that humanewashing shapes how harm is understood and justified.  The speakers are Laila Kassam PhD from Project Phoenix; Dr. Faraz Harsini from Allied Scholars for Animal; and Lia Wilbourn from In Defense of Animal Protection.  Learn more and register at https://www.humanehoax.org/

Animal Protection Law in Switzerland
Though there has been a great deal of press coverage for new animal protections in Switzerland, according to the Journal of Animal Law, Ethics and One Health, the protection fall far short of ideal. Still, they are a step in the right direction.

Study Reassures Parents of Veg Babies
Looking at 49,000 children and teens from 18 countries, researchers found that with proper supplementation, vegan and vegetarian children thrive.
Vegetarian and vegan diets can be healthy for kids, study finds. But there’s a catch

Another Reassuring Study of Infants
Lower weight vegan babies catch up to non-vegan babies by age two according to this study of 1.2 million infants.   You can read the abstract and the full report here: Growth Patterns of Infants From Vegan Households Similar to Those From Omnivorous Households

Oxford Study Shows Veg Diets Reduce Risk for Many Cancers
Except for esophageal cancer among vegetarians and colon cancer among vegans (surprising to me), the risk for most cancers seems to be reduced among vegetarians and vegans according to a study of almost two million people over 16 years.  Note the caveats in this article.  We are reminded that association is not the same as causation. And that vitamin B12 and calcium are important.  This was an observational study, so other lifestyle factors may account for the findings.
