Marin VEG
November 2024

Happy November! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but practicing gratitude every day helps me focus on remembering and helping all beings who are not as fortunate as I am. May gratitude and generosity warm your days this month.

Below you will read about a master class from Miyoko, two new places to enjoy dairy free milk with your coffee, a new course on the history of vegetarianism in the West, two new vegan products and good media coverage of a vegan-by-default program that's having an impact.  Happy reading!

World Vegan Day
November is World Vegan Day and the launch of World Vegan Month. It began in England in 1994 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Vegan Society.  Learn more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Vegan_Day

Beasts and Beliefs Course Begins
The Arihanta Institute is offering an on-line course on the origins of vegetarianism and veganism in the West. Even the course description is informative and interesting.  The cost is $25.  https://www.arihantainstitute.org/course/1017-beasts-beliefs-animals-and-the-origins-of-vegetarianism-in-the-ancient-west

Starbucks Eliminates Surcharge for Nondairy Milks
"in early November" according to the New York Times, Starbucks will no longer charge extra for nondairy milk.  I learned this from Unchained TV where Jane Velez Mitchel attributes the new policy to PETA and its supporters.  Yay PETA!
Then, I read in the Times about a number of additional changes the new owner of Starbucks is making to try to bring the chain back to its former popularity. Here are links to both stories:

American Airlines to Offer Vegan Creamer
Thanks to another vigorous campaign by PETA, if you ask for coffee on an American Airlines flight you can now have it with vegan creamer.  Learn more and see how you can help get this option on other airlines at  https://www.peta.org/blog/american-airlines-offers-vegan-creamer/

Beyond Steak Now in Supermarkets
If you know any vegans or wannabe vegans who want to eat steak, tell them that now they can.  The company that brought us Beyond Burgers and Beyond Sausages is expanding to offer steak.  Not for me, thank you, but if it helps others to stop eating animals, I'm all for it.    https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/beyond-meat-vegan-steak/

Vegan Pesto from Barilla
We don't have a Kroger's supermarket in Marin, but starting in 2025 many major supermarkets will carry vegan pesto from pasta company Barilla.  Kroger's has it now.  It seems to me that more and more companies are starting or expanding their vegan products.  https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/barilla-vegan-pesto/

Good Coverage of an Important Subject
While I don't share the admiration for some of the projects described here, I was happy to see The New York Times publish an article about the role of food production in climate change.  And I was especially thrilled to read about the wonderful work of Katie Cantrell who is changing the default option to vegan in hospitals and corporate culture.  https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/25/climate/food-emissions.html?unlocked_article_code=1.WU4.ZS3d.3-2QFhBeR1ZI&smid=url-share
