December 2023
Marin VEG
Hello to you and to the last month of the year. May the long
nights nourish and replenish us. May the hills turning green
delight us. And may every good blessing find its way into our
hearts, our homes and our world.
Rest in Peace
Karen Davis
Karen Davis, the
founder and director of United Poultry Concerns and a tireless
advocate for chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and all birds
used for food, died in November. She was a pioneer, calling
attention to some of the most consumed, most abused, and most
ignored animals. Her obituary in the New York Times attests
to her influence and her unique place in the animal rights
movement. She will be missed.

Confusing
News from Miyoko's Creamery
Miyoko's
Creamery will be closing its facility in January and laying
off 40 people, but I don't understand why. "to increase
production and efficiency" does not begin to answer my
questions.

If Cats
and Dogs Went Vegan
I was
always under the impression that cats cannot be healthy on a
vegan diet, but dogs thrive without animal products. There
were a few articles last month about how it would slow climate
change if we fed our companion animals a vegan diet, but I
didn't see much on how to keep a cat off meat. Below are links
to the study showing the change that is possible if we could
switch dogs and cats to a vegan diet and a less technical
article about the study. Here's one excerpt from the article:
"If all U.S.-based dogs and cats went vegan,
researchers estimated that the lives of 2 billion
livestock animals a year could be saved, along with
billions of aquatic animals.
If pets around the world stopped eating meat,
around 7 billion livestock animals a year would be spared
from slaughter, according to the study."

How Meat
Harms Wildlife
This
insightful article from the Center for Biological Diversity is
an eye opener. Just reading the headings gives you an idea of
the scope of the detrimental influence of animal agriculture.
The details in the text are important and heartbreaking.

Peace on
Earth
Every December
I like to share this piece from C. David Coat's 1989 book Old
MacDonald's Factory Farm. Unfortunately, despite being
first published in 1989, the message is still relevant.
“Isn`t man an
amazing animal? He kills wildlife - birds, kangaroos, deer,
all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice,
foxes, and dingoes - by the millions in order to protect his
domestic animals and their feed. Then he kills domestic
animals by the billions and eats them. This in turn kills
man by the million, because eating all those animals leads
to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart
disease, kidney disease, and cancer. So then man tortures
and kills millions more animals to look for cures for these
diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are
being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they
could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals.
Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the
absurdity of man, who kills so easily and so violently, and
once a year sends out a card praying for 'Peace on Earth.”
