Marin VEG
Holy smokes! Smoke and fire are the latest challenges in this
year of heat waves, virus, job losses, and shutdowns. Walking is
usually my go-to stress management plan, but now, even walking and
deep breathing aren't healthy. So I'm meditating more, doing more
yoga at home, and sending well wishes to everyone who's struggling.
May we all be safe from inner and outer harm.
At least there's lots of good and interesting news about
veganism.

Culture Shift Book Club
One of my favorite not for profits, The Factory Farming
Awareness Coalition, is launching a book club to discuss books and
articles that explore speciesism, racism, sexism, materialism, and
their interconnections. The group will meet virtually from 5:30 to
7 PM on the first Tuesday of every month. The first book will be
Aphro-ism: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, and Black Veganism from
Two Sisters by Aph Ko and Syl Ko. RSVP if you want to take part: amy@ffacoalition.org
You can order the book and support local bookstores at https://bookshop.org/books/aphro-ism-essays-on-pop-culture-feminism-and-black-veganism-from-two-sisters/9781590565551

Corned Beef at Veggie Grill
The New Yorker in me liked this new sandwich at
Veggie Grill. It's a Reuben, and the corned beef was almost
overwhelmed by the cheese and sauerkraut, but it was still
delicious. https://vegnews.com/2020/8/vegan-corned-beef-to-launch-at-veggie-grill-nationwide
Miyoko's Butter Prevails in Court
A U.S. district court has ruled that Miyoko's butter may continue to
use the word "butter," as it is clearly marked lactose free, vegan,
and cruelty free. One phrase was not allowed, however. Learn which
one that is at https://vegworldmag.com/judge-rules-in-favor-of-miyokos-in-vegan-butter-case/
Was Jesus a Vegetarian?
I very much enjoyed and learned a lot from this well written
article by William Melton, an attorney who is studying to become a
minister. Talk about career change! The concluding paragraph is
especially good. But I hope you won't jump to the end because the
whole piece is worth reading.

Cows Are Not Good for Land Conservation
In the last few years ranchers have promoted the misleading
belief that cows are good for land conservation. This excellent
article from the Salt Lake Tribune rebuts that argument well. https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/08/18/jennifer-molidor-erik/
Cows in Point Reyes vs. Elk
Because of the presence of cows in Pt. Reyes National Seashore,
fences limit the range area for Tule Elk. In these dry summer
conditions, ponds where the elk find water are dried up, and fences
threaten escape routes in case of fire. The streams and "seeps" that
also provide water are not easy for some elk to access. Thanks to
Judith G. and other activists, the media are starting to pay
attention. A few years ago, half of the elk died for lack of water.
The activists and media are trying to avert a similar catastrophe
this year. Learn more and add your voice at FORELK.org.

Disturbing News About Dairy Free, Non-vegan Manufactured Food
According to an article published on godairyfree.org, scientists
in a lab can now produce dairy protein that is almost identical to
cow dairy casein and whey. And a company called Perfect Day is using
this protein in products it promotes to vegans. This is from the
article: People who make vegan purchases based solely on
environmental or animal rights concerns might feel better about
purchasing products made with Perfect Day’s dairy proteins. No
cows are directly used in the making – just software, petri
dishes, and production equipment. Yikes! I find this
disturbing, as there is no need for dairy protein in the human diet
after weaning. Here's the article: https://www.godairyfree.org/news/perfect-day-vegan-not-dairy-free
