Marin Vegetarian Education Group
When I moved here from New York in 1986, people asked me if I
would miss the four seasons. They didn't know, and neither did I,
that the green hills would turn to gold, that the lizards would be
all over the trails, that each month has its own display of
wildflowers, and that rain, sun, fog, heat and cold all have their
seasons here, sometimes in just one day! Have you noticed that this
year's strawberries are especially sweet? May this summer be a sweet
one for you.

Barn Raising Benefit Party for
Rancho Compassion
The animals at Miyoko's Rancho Compassion need a new barn, and
we are invited to help build it. Not with wood and hammers, but with
funds to make it happen. There will be a barn raising benefit party
at Rancho Compassion in Nicasio from 3 to 6 PM on Saturday, June
17. Enjoy the animals, music, great food, drinks, a silent auction,
and guest speaker Jasmin Singer of Our Hen House. Come early if you
want to meet the animals (tours starting at 2PM). The cost is a
tax-deductible donation of $75 per person ($50 for children). See
the schedule of events and buy your ticket at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rancho-compasion-barn-raising-benefit-tickets-34131476164
New Booklet from Vegan Outreach
One of the most effective vegan advocacy groups - and one of my
favorites - is Vegan Outreach. This outstanding organization hands
out free booklets on college campuses around the world in astounding
numbers: 30 million individuals have received a booklet by hand from
a volunteer since 1993. These booklets are well researched for
facts and effectiveness. As Vegan Outreach reports:
As documented in our
article, Leafleting Effectiveness Study – Fall 2016
Update, reading a VO booklet made:
- 50% of respondents want to eat
fewer mammals and birds,
- 35-40% want to eat less eggs,
dairy and fish,
- 70% discussed the booklet with
others, and
- 80% now more sympathetic to
farmed animals.
The article also
describes strong evidence that for every 75 booklets read, 1
person becomes a vegan for 1 week or longer. And although not
documented in that article, our analysis also suggested that for
every 200 booklets read, 3 people go vegetarian and 1 person
goes vegan.
Now VeganOutreach is
about to publish a new booklet called What Is Speciesism -
And What You Can Do to Help End It. You can read it in a pdf
version at https://veganoutreach.org//pdfs/SP.pdf
I encourage you
to support Vegan Outreach. Become a volunteer or send a
contribution to support their good work. Learn more at https://veganoutreach.org/category/about/
Why Giving Animals as
Gifts is a Bad Idea
You may want to print this article and save it with your
holiday decorations to read again and share in December. There
are many organizations that suggest we pay for a lamb or cow or
other animal to be given to an impoverished family in a poor
country in lieu of a gift to a loved one. While the organization A
Well Fed World would be a wonderful choice to contribute to during
the holidays or any time, its founder, Dawn Moncrief, has written
a terrific article for Free From Harm about why those "animals as
gifts" organizations should not be supported. Read it here: http://freefromharm.org/agriculture-environment/10-reasons-to-say-no-to-animal-gifting-hunger-orgs/
